About Bali

Bali is one of more than 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago and is located just over 2 kilometres (almost 1.5 miles) from the eastern tip of the island of Java and west of the island of Lombok. The island, home to about 4 million people, is approximately 144 kilometres (90 mi.) from east to west and 80 kilometres (50 mi.) north to south.

Culture

Bali is a pocket of Hindu religion and culture. Every aspect of Balinese life is suffused with religion, but the most visible signs are the tiny offerings found in every Balinese house, work place, restaurant, souvenir stall and airport check-in desk.

CLIMATE

Bali enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round – the weather is particularly pleasant between June and September. The average temperature in June is 80 degrees fahrenheit.

What to Bring

Light clothing is appropriate with a sweater or jacket for evenings. Comfortable walking sandals and sports shoes are suitable for light touring. Sun protection and a wide-brimmed hat is recommended during the day. Legs, shoulders and upper arms should be covered when visiting places of worship.

Language and currency

Balinese and Bahasa Indonesian are the two main languages on the island. The currency is the rupiah, which can be obtained at the ATM at the airport or currency exchange centers. US dollars are also accepted in the main centers of the island.
